RECAP - DAY 2
WOMEN
Gustavus widened its lead in the team competition and now has 468 points. St. Olaf College is next at 398 followed by Carleton College at 392.
Friday's finals started with St. Olaf diver Alyssa Germeroth capturing the win in the 3-meter competition for the second straight year.
Carleton led off the racing portion of the evening with a win in the 200 Medley Relay behind Kale Zicafoose, Kate Alexander, Kaarin Taylor and Jen Gratz in 1:47.96.
Alexander then cruised to the victory in the 400 IM as she obliterated her own conference record by four-and-a-half seconds with a time of 4:30.33, an NCAA automatic qualifier. For the second straight year she swept the 200 and 400 IM at the conference championships.
Taylor took top honors in the 100 butterfly and teammate Karin Brown was first to the wall in the 200 freestyle.
St. Olaf's Kjersten Grinde got to the wall first in the 100 breaststroke.
St. Thomas placed two of the top three swimmers in the 100 backstroke, including champion Becca Ney.
St. Olaf concluded the evening with a repeat victory in the 800 freestyle relay.
MEN
Gustavus will head into the final day of competition with a 40-point advantage. The Gusties sit at 547 with St. Olaf recording 540 points.
St. Olaf prevailed in the 200 medley relay as Adam Meyer, David Manley, Nelson Westby and Jake Koch finished in 1:33.28.
Carleton's Ted Marschall broke his own meet record with a 3:57.11 in the 400 IM, good for a 10-second victory. It was his third consecutive conference title in the event, and he swept the individual medley races this year.
Westby picked up his first individual wins of the championships later in the session, taking the 100 Fly in an NCAA "A" cut 49.14. He then broke the conference mark in the 100 breaststroke with another NCAA automatic qualifier at 55.97.
Gustavus' Matt Stewart held off teammate, and defending champion Ben Hanson, to win the 200 freestyle. The Gusties held down five of the top six positions in the race.
Nathan Young of Macalester picked up the victory in the 100 backstroke.
The Gustavus 800 freestyle relay established a new MIAC Championships record at 6:48.49.
